A novel dealing with English labor problems, round and about the South Wales mining districts at the turn of the century. Somewhat the sort of background and treatment as in Jack Jones' Unfinished Journey (Oxford), and with the same sort of market. The story of a boy gently raised, who rebels against the case of his life, studies medicine, and goes among the miners to work. His own set turns on him and tries to wreck him. The story shows the bravery, stupidity, compromises of everyone, from owners to lowest grade of miners. There's a rather charming love story with a girl of the miners. A book of primary interest for its study of social conditions at the time, the handling of the setting and characters ring true, and the humor is a relief.
