This book will qualify more as an interesting and pleasant way to learn early California history than as absorbing historical fiction. As a story, it misses the mark, the narrative is uneven in pace and interest, the style is labored. The plot is built around the expedition of Spaniards led by Capt. Anza and Padre Font, who journeyed over mountains and deserts to found the colony that became San Francisco, in 1776. Colorful and authentic detail of early California and the missions.
