It's the action element and the reasonably believable young hero that saves this book from being a dead-level WW II story. The setting is Crete and the author's unusual device is to take a young sailor off his ship and put him on land during the British retreat. This did happen to sailors in that area and when seventeen-year-old apprentice seaman Stan starts fighting on land with a Greek resistance band, the story picks up and maintains its momentum. After Nazi encounters and never a dull skirmish, Stan gets back to sea. A readable, short adventure entertainment for the boys by the author of The Big Sea.
