Lyttle has assembled a lot of information from a number of different fields, but without imposing any unifying perspective. Mostly a rundown on the properties, history, production and applications of paint pigments and vehicles, natural and synthetic dyes, and different types of ink, this also includes a fleeting glance at the science of optics, ""a few chemical facts,"" an explanation of different printing methods (with some history of printing and writing) and some suggested home ""projects"" -- hand grinding brick for red pigment, extracting dyes from berries and roots, hand printing with linoleum blocks or stencils, etc. Murky.
