A find for the folk-lore explorers. Richard Chase edited the Jack Tales (legends of the southern mountains) -- and here has recorded his experiences and retold tales collected with descriptive passages giving local color and customs. These folk tales retain the flavor of Elizabethan England in sources, names, and quality. Even the words themselves retain the flavor in words still in use which go back to old English. A large appendix gives detailed sources, variations, and other clues beloved of those in the know. The use of the material with children demands a sympathetic adult.
