This collection of 15 short stories is the 44th in the O. Henry Memorial series. The first prize story, ""The Embarkment for Cythera"" is John Cheever's and part of his Wapshot Scandal. The second prize went to J.C. Oates' ""Stigmata"", which makes use of extraordinary circumstances to reveal the consequences of a failure to love. Margaret Shedd's ""The Everlasting Witness"" is the third prize story in which a woman, looking for her missing son in war newsreels, is unwilling to accept the clear issues of death or life. This collection seems especially worthwhile and it is interesting to note that 20% of the stories originally appeared in The New Yorker.
