THE DOVE BRINGS PEACE

Try the Saroyan market for these episodes from the life of an Armenian youth in this country. The setting is Revere, Mass., where his immigrant parents spoke the homeland language, and he knew others like himself, making the adaptations of the next generation. There's the nostalgia for the old country, there are the bad boys, the scandals, the near tragedies, the typical humor, the hungers -- physical, emotional, economic --, the tenements, the attempts at gardening, the first love, the relatives -- and the family problems. All in mellow retrospect, transmuted through the years from pity, anger, discomfort to sympathy, pride and touching gentleness.
