About an Armenian family in Massachusetts fathered by Setrak Dinjyan, an expert shoe-stitcher who is constantly changing jobs because his pitiful wages are never enough to care for the needs of his family. Warm sympathy is developed in the characters of son Leo, crippled from the day of his christening, diligent Sarah who earns money after school, reckless but angelically voiced Varant, and little Sato who wants a blue hat and patent leather shoes. There is Manoong who has wonderful things in his store -- and lastly, Setrak's triumph at backgammon which brings the whole family some unlooked-for luck. These allen roots communicate an intimate reality and make a direct appeal to a wide audience.
