ADVENTURES WITH FRESHWATER ANIMALS

By

Pub Date: April 28th, 1964
Publisher: Lippincott

A wealth of minute detail about the collection, cultivation and observation of small freshwater animals from protozoa to mosquitoes and tadpoles may be found in this book. Except for the microscope, most of the items suggested as aids to the reader may be procured at little cost from grocery, drug or pet stores. Some 185 figures (not available with the galley) should elucidate much of the decidedly technical terminology employed by the author who is a high school science teacher and a contributor of professional articles in his field. Organization of the book into 47 ""Adventures"" each titled ""We Meet..."", ""We Ask..."", ""We Investigate..."", etc., may mislead a prospective reader with only a casual interest in the subject matter as well as put off the somewhat prepared student who may assume the material is too elementary. It is definitely not, despite an organization similar to that used by the author in earlier books for younger readers, such as Adventures with insects. This book should appeal primarily to aquarium and terrarium fanciers, preferably those who have had or are taking an elementary biology course. Useful stimulant and guide to pond-collecting excursions. Librarians will miss an index, although they may find the list of illustrations a useful substitute.
