THE TRUTH ABOUT BIG-TIME FOOTBALL by Richard I. Miller

THE TRUTH ABOUT BIG-TIME FOOTBALL

By

Publisher: Morrow-Wm. Sloane

Fortunately this surgical dissection of football, with its ills, ailments and diseases -- and its healthy aspects as well --has been made by a man who loves the games and wants to save it. It is a hard-hitting factual report on many of the unsavory aspects of the game:- athletic scholarships that run into big money, the win-at-any-price philosophy of too many coaches, alumni and even college presidents. He points up the dangers of bowl games and all-star games and suggests as an antidote a plan assigning the great profits made on these games to the project of playgrounds the country over. This is no fanatic trying to tear down football, but an idealist sincerely trying to protect the game with healthy, sane de-emphasis program. He sees encouragement in some of the plans announced by the Ivy League and others, but feels there are still coaches and alumni to be watched. Though at times he writes laboriously, the sincerity of his purpose comes through.
