BIG BEAR TO THE RESCUE

It begins like an object lesson in the folly of jumping to conclusions, as Big Bear dashes frantically about getting honey for Skunk in return for a brush for Spotted Pony in return for a pillow for Owl in return for a Wheelbarrow for Squirrel in return for a rope to rescue Mr. Mole, who seems to have fallen into the well. (No wonder that Big Bear cuts the explanation on his last lap: ""It's a long story. Just give me the brush, Skunk."") But when all assemble at the well only to find that Mr. Mole had simply walked into it through his tunnel, Big Bear's friends devise an adage to suit the occasion: ""A person should never be too busy to rescue a friend. Even when the friend doesn't want to be rescued."" Ending at least with all hearts in the right place--but perhaps a person should never try to improve on ""The Old Woman and Her Pig"" without at least relating the items supplied and demanded to the animals' features or to some necessary sequence.
