A mystery novel, rather than straight who-dun-it, in a story of an artist who dies, apparently by accident -- or suicide -- in a stream near a Priory ruin in an English village, of the midlands. Her secretary and dearest friend, is not satisfied with the verdict, and convinces the reluctant new owner of the old inn where she had stayed, that there's more than meets the eye -- and investigation is in order. The unraveling of the dead woman's story, involving alcoholism, blackmail and murder, is told against a romantic background of the English countryside.
