San Francisco's Chinatown, before and after the earthquake and fire, as background for the story of a Chinese lad who comes over during the mass immigration period, and rises from the coolie rank to a position of importance in the community, a merchant of distinction, a buffer between the whiten and the Chinese. It is a rather fascinating and very unusual picture, a revealing characterization of a man who is forced to make compromises between the old and the new, to come to terms with two opposing sets of standards. A moving tale, with pathos and humor and sympathy. I can't see a wide market for it, though interest in China and the Chinese today may reflect itself in more concern for the Chinese in our midst.
