DEAD RUN

Christmas with Captain Heimrich and his wife Susan and her son Michael and his girl Joan (there is a lot of unmodernly paternal speculation about the young people) is interrupted when their old friend and the town's upstanding lawyer is killed. This leads back to his criminal defense of a young woman who in full view--so some claim--had shot her lover with a rifle. Equable as ever and there's that audience which finds it just as comforting as the annuity which appears with the same regularity.
