Perhaps the most amazing thing about the Hudson's Bay Company is that Radisson and Grosseilliers, the men whose explorations made it all possible, were left out in the cold by the hungry hunters who capitalized on the knowledge of these two. At any rate it is the most striking aspect of this brief and efficient social biography by Mr. Morenus. Beginning with the story of a man, Radisson, and ending with that of a nation, Morenus fits the one into the other with readable simplicity, commenting not only on the exigencies of a voyageur existence but on the international battles waged over, the right to trade furs which meant a right to territories as well. On down to the war between the Hudson's Bay Company and the Northwesters this recounts the English accession in Canada and manages to give an idea of history as a fluid, moving thing.
