THE FIRST BOOK OF THE CONSTITUTION

Another in the First Book series, this comprehensive text tells the story of the United States Constitution from its beginnings in 1780, through the stormy controversies which pursued its conception, its ratification in 1787, and its subsequent amendments. Stressing the fact that here was no inert piece of paper, but rather a dynamic document which evolved from many years of conflict and compromise, Richard Morris writes clearly of the problems which motivated the drafting of what is, perhaps, the most important document in American history. A discussion of its values and a copy of the constitution, itself, conclude the book. Striking black and white illustrations by Leonard Everett Fisher lend dramatic interest to what would otherwise be a useful, but somewhat pedestrian treatment. An excellent supplement to class room study, The First Book of the Constitution will also hold its own as a primary text on the subject of constitutional history.
