When eleven-year-old Mike begins to take an interest in Orry, his emotionally disturbed younger brother, he is surprised to learn how much Orry looks up to him, and how much his rejection of their chamber musician father has been a model for Orry's less rational withdrawal. Mike's dawning self-realization is subtly handled while Orry's recovery--as he shares his secret ability to speak with, first, his therapist, then Mike alone and, finally, through a kind of role-playing drama, to the whole family--is an aggressively heart-macerating process. As much as the family dynamics ring true, one can't help feeling manipulated by the pace of Orry's progress, as well as by the assurance that the boys' once indifferent father is suddenly about to change his tune.
