GUIDE TO GARDENING WITH YOUNG PEOPLE

The report run in the February 15th issue- P. 134 (J-46) should really have been put in the Parents and Teachers' section. A second reading of the text makes a few corrections in approach important. The author is Coordinator for Science Study in the Elementary Schools of Bronx County, N.Y. and his interests lie in the direction of school gardens. Consequently, while only the final paragraphs in each chapter are specifically directed to those who work with young gardeners, actually the text itself, at many points, needs interpretation, explanation, clarification- on the part of a trained adult, and might well be very misleading if used by young gardeners. In no sense is it beginning garden book. From planning to harvesting, there are areas in the text that demand interpretation, or at least some basic grounding in the subject. Please note his correction and -- if purchasing the book at all- use with parents or teachers, rather than the 12-15 youngsters without background.
