Written by a Chicago Sun-Times science reporter, this is an excellent chronology with historical perspective of man's ventures in Antarctica, the most formidable continent. Lewis surveys all the notable early attempts before modern scientists were attracted there. He concentrates on the details of the recent, powerful IGY expeditions during which twelve nations cooperated in investigating the geography, geology, weather, flora and fauna of Antarctica as well as man's ability to survive in so severe an environment. There are many splendid photographs, some published here for the first time, and maps which form an additional eye-witness record. Reference notes substantiate further, and the story of this last land frontier should challenge interests in many areas.
