A great authority on international secret service writes comprehensively of the post-war years, taking up the thread where his Story of Secret Service left off. Rowan shows how the spy has evolved during these years into a terrorist, increasing the range and striking power of secret service. Much more overt now, secret service involves murder, kidnapping, sabotage, other subversive subterranea. The book parallels political movements of the day, the Big Four (Hitler, Mussolini, Stalin, and the Mikado) all responsible for terrorism in their respective countries, spreading outward to the leading powers. He tells the stories behind their political moves -- the main incendiarist activities -- the Reichstag burning -- the death of Alexander of Yugoslavia -- of Dollfuss -- of von Fritsch -- the bombing of the Athenia, etc. Material familiar for the most part, but presented in new light, presaging darker things for the future.
