JUVENILES IN TROUBLE

A well-known haven for runaways and delinquents, New York's sometimes controversial Covenant House, is the centerpiece of this morality play. Be warned—this can happen to you: pressure from the impromptu ``family'' of a gang, addiction to street life, a run through a shoddy court system, shock incarceration, perhaps even life imprisonment or execution. While Wormser emphasizes effective programs such the one at Covenant House, young people should find his blow-by-blow descriptions of daily life in the hell of being on the outs with the law sobering, especially when he uses transcripts to demonstrate the muddled thinking and lack of forethought that got some of the kids in trouble.
