THE HUNDRED YARD LIE: The Corruption of College Football and What We Can Do to Stop It

A hard-hitting indictment of corruption in college football, by Sports Illustrated's lead college-football writer, author of Heaven is a Playground (1977) and Joe Namath and Other Guys (1976). Telander convincingly uncovers and condenms the drugs, crime, greed, and egotism that infest today's college football game, and then offers his prescription to solve the problem: the establishment of a semi-pro football league to supplant the present-day college leagues, and to be called the Age Group Professional Football League (AGPFL). To be sponsored by colleges--but not manned by students--and partially subsidized by the NFL, the AGPFL would in effect act as football's minor leagues. A reasonable idea, certainly--but one unlikely to make much headway against the megabuck college football industry.
