THE STORY OF JOHN HOPE

Biography of a Negro, son of a Scots father and a quadroon mother, born in 1868 and champion of equality for his people. From a happy life in Augusta, he learned the violence of anti-Negro feeling, won many friends in his New England schooling at Worcester Academy and Brown University, returned to the South to teach. He headed the Atlanta Baptist College (later Morehouse) and was the first Negro president of a University, in Atlanta. A fiery, fearless advocate of his people's rights, he worked and fought a dedicated battle for them, helped them in the fame he achieved as an educator, as an admired traveler, as an able administrator. His story, like that of other prominent Negroes, has the concentration of devotion to a cause, contributes yet another aspect of the means by which and in which the Negro is achieving his goals.
