To those who know, and like, the French parts of the province of Quebec, this story of the Laurentians may have some appeal. But most readers will find it so slow moving and unmotivated a story, that its quaintness and charm will be negligible factors. One builds a certain amount of interest in Euchariste Moisan; one feels sympathy for him in his old -- and unwanted -- age, though one sees the pattern of his own life repeating itself in the pattern of his son's life. Limited appeal.
