When Toby Clayton came to take his place on his uncle's whaling ship, in which he owned half interest, he found that the captain--his uncle--had died, very shortly after having apparently sold the ship to Peter Flick, the third mate. The circumstances of the sale are mysteriously confusing, and Toby is determined to straighten them out, but the dour Flick, now Captain Flick, is anything but helpful... The events are predictable, but the solid background of details about whaling and the well-conveyed sense of the excitement of shipboard adventure provide a strong current of interest for boys.
