The cold formality of Cacilla's relationship with her stepmother Doris is offset by the openhearted joviallty of the Luchettis, downstairs neighbors, new to San Francisco. Though Cici is overjoyed when the antics of Bello, Uncle Aldo's monkey, make an inroad into Doris' mild snobbery, she is not permitted ownership of the precious locket bequeathed to her by her real mother until she can demonstrate real love. Many compromises, a few setbacks and a great deal of courage are required to bring Cici and Doris together and the various crises and gaieties among the Luchettis certainly help. Inner struggles played out compassionately against contrasting modes of life in early 20th century America make this a pleasure to read and a realistic lesson in living.
