LIFE IN REGENCY ENGLAND

By

Pub Date: Jan. 27th, 1964

The chapters cover lower, middle and upperclass English life during the years 1811 through 1820. London, politics, and the manners and morals of the period get separate chapters as do the Puritan Revival and the dawn of the Age of Seriousness. In addition to the arts and innovations in building which are styled ""Regency"" there is much information on dress, furniture and the literature of the time. The expert author writes a lively prose which is characterized by neat turns of phrase and he has a sure eye for just the right quotation, of which there are many. At the end of each chapter is a list of books for further reading that should prove helpful to students with access to library collections strong in English literature, history and biography. There are reproduction of over 150 contemporary illustrations -- paintings, woodcuts, engravings and silhouettes. The illustrations are listed in the complete index in heavy type.
