A satiric swipe at the familiar target of American greed. Poor Orville Hollinday--his rich bully of a father wants him to be a lawyer, while Orville (a simple soul like Vonnegut's Mr. Rosewater) just wants to pump gas in Little America, Wyoming, home of the world's largest service station. After muffing attempts to blow up his father's Cadillac, Orville makes it to Little America, where he settles down, surrounded by various subplots involving his mother's illicit affair, his father's pursuit of a young deb, and a smuggling ring which imports opium from Vietnam to be the secret ingredient in Special Sauce for fastfood hamburgers. Orville eventually finds happiness with the lovely Bobalou, while everyone else converges in primitive chaos à la Terry Southern (but sans Southern's trenchant wit). A laughless scramble through yesterday's papers.
