The winner of the Herald Tribune prize for juvenile fiction tells of his own and his young wife's experiences in repatching their lives on an island in the British Virgin Islands. No glamorous picture of an enchanted tropical isle, this, but a realistic exposure of heat, dirt, laziness, insidious fever of tropics in the veins of whites -- and of how the discovery of an island they could buy for $60.00 and of sheer sweat and labor in making it their own home, is the remaking of two lives on the point of disruption. Sharply drawn, with vigorous pictures of their struggles to make two cents do what needed two dollars, of the triumphant success, and the way in which their efforts brought them acceptance on the part of the natives. Modern in method and content, and not for the shockeasilies perhaps.
