We've witnessed the drama of cetacean birth and babyhood before, most recently in Conklin's Journey of the Gray Whales (1974) which imbued the experience with far more beauty and factual weight. Here, against pages unsubtly washed in tones of blue, green and yellow, a bull calf starts life by nursing, swimming after a passing ship, learning to catch fish, and even being rescued by adult members of his pod from a voracious tiger shark--all without exhibiting any particular personality or grace. Unlike Seahorse (1972), just another face in the crowd.
