THE GLORIFICATION OF AL TOOLUM

By

Pub Date: April 16th, 1953

A gentler handling of the assininities of advertising lifts Al Toolum from his south shore Long Island job and home into the homefronts of America, via radio, television and the newspapers when his middle son, Sherman, wins a contest which gains Al the title of Yankee Doodle 1952. Beset by the psychological problems of Little Louie, by his wife, Emily's determination to be newsworthy too, by his inability to accede to the agency's inflexible requests, Al almost loses his best friend, his self respect and his belief in himself. But Little Louie's psychiatric sessions, Emily's arrest and the picture of himself as an un-average man dynamite him into self expression -- and realization. A pleasantly plausible tale which affirms national individualism versus organized pressures and which should have a wide popular following.
