A trained anthropologist invites teenagers to study the Polynesian Islands originally discovered by the ancestors of today's inhabitants and re-discovered by European explorers in the 16th century. A trip back through five thousand years of history follows the movement of Polynesians from the time they left the coast of Asia, the societies they founded in Tonga, Samoa, Tahiti, Hawaii and Easter Island. Cultures which have long been the subjects of intensive study by anthropologists and archaeologists are described, along with evidence gathered by the European explorers, all prefaced by an appraisal of Polynesian society today. The most recent theories of origin refute long established ones and all of this current research is available here in factual, accurate terms. It is a well written account for the teenager pre-disposed to the general subject.
