With Phineas Fogg in mind and the firm belief that ""thinking makes it so"" in heart, Robert Christopher started off in 1952, on his own variation of the Jules Verne story- and then sat down and wrote quite a lively and literate account of his experiences. He went from Manhattan to Manhattan- via Germany, Italy, the Middle East, India, Siam and Japan, for just $80, no more, no less. As token jobs, the author collected dirt samples for the Pfizer drug laboratories- and took his camera with him as a means of earning his passage. Once in Frankfort, hitching a ride to Vienna brought him one step nearer Rome, where friends helped him get to Greece and Istanbul, where more friends helped him get passage to Arabia, and so forth. During it all, there are few dull moments. Our traveller has a heart for people, likes them and is as aware as his time permits of their particular cultural and social problems. He sees them through more than the tourist's eyes and the forthright good humour with which he crosses lands and seas should bring out the wanderlust in any of his readers.
