Now out from under her celebrated father’s long professional shadow, criminal defense attorney Keera Duggan takes on a case that will test her to the limit.

When air freight employee and presumed drug dealer John Lockett is killed with a headshot in his garage and his live-in lover, Melissa Scott, is beaten to death in his bedroom, Dets. Frank Rossi and Billy Ford of the Seattle PD Violent Crimes unit are quick to pounce on a suspect. That’s largely because there’s so much circumstantial evidence against Michael Westbrook, a Flying Tigers co-worker who was seen at Lockett’s house the night of the murders and whose DNA is conveniently distributed around both of the crime scenes. But it’s also because Kim Tran, the ferociously activist prosecutor of the D.A.’s Most Dangerous Offender Program widely known as Batwoman, is more eager to close the case than to explore every lead. After the investigator for Duggan & Associates, Michael’s uncle JP Harrison, begs Keera to defend his nephew, she realizes that the challenge of the case extends far beyond the evidence. There’s a very specific reason for Tran’s obsessive desire to lock up killers she suspects of murder: because as a 7-year-old child, she witnessed the brutal killing of her own parents by a thief who was acquitted despite her eyewitness testimony. Fans of Dugoni won’t be surprised by his close attention to minute evidential details and courtroom maneuvers. A bigger surprise is how much more absorbing Keera’s legal battle is than the mystery of who killed Lockett and Scott.

Another page-turner from an author who could probably make Blackstone’s Commentaries sound thrilling.
