KIRKUS REVIEW

Putting aside ""awe and presupposition,"" here is a comprehensive (and appreciative) popular history of Russia from prehistory through the reign of Peter the Great. The text integrates political events, cultural process and the structure of society; it is adorned with occasional marginal illustrations and clear maps and supplemented with stunning photo essays. The account of cossacks and peasants and aristocrats is lucid and lively, buttressed by quotes and citations of sources, clarified by comparison with landmarks and leaders in Western history. Mr. Wallace wrote the well-received World of Leonardo; this is an equally fine introduction to a more obscure topic.
