TWO WOMEN, TWO WORLDS

Again a ship to shore story of popular proportions and superficial soundings accounts for young, irresponsible Steen, a seaman, who is at first attracted by a bar waif, Anita. Later in Japan he falls in love with the diminutive, novice prostitute, Miyoko, and they have an idyllic affair amid even more idyllic scenery. But Steen must ship out. Back home, he is repelled by Anita's crude Americanisms, agrees to marry her, abandons her again, and eventually after the war he finds Miyoko again. But she has been in Nagasaki, and she dies, and a now repentant Steen returns to salvage Anita. Acceptable, but no more.
