A HISTORY OF PHELPS DODGE

A patiently researched and recorded of the company which grew with the nation, and which had its origin some 150 years ago in a saddle-making shop in Hartford, Connecticut. This is the story of its radiation and ramification, from the partnership which began as a family enterprise with the virtues of Puritan perseverance and thrift, and which weathered the acute depression of the 1830's for the period of expansion which followed. With the death of the ""merchant prince"" Dodge, the Phelps Dodge Company shifted its policies and activities, tied up with the engineer-metallurgist Douglas and the copper interests in the West, purchased the Copper Queen and built the El Paso & Southwestern. Its big labor controversy in 1917, its reorganization after the war and new acquisitions, its development of new ore supplies, this traces the history of a major enterprise in terms of facts and the occasional figures of its presidents....
