Many Christian hymn tunes have intriguing names which baffle the average church goer. How did some tunes acquire such names as ""Leprous Jew"", ""Evening Shade"", ""Old Hundred"", etc.? Dr. McCutchan, dean-emeritus of the School of Music of De Pauw University, has collected authentic background information for some 2000 hymn tunes. He prepares the way for four indexes:- Alphabetical List of Tunes, Melodic Index, Names not included in the alphabetical list but mentioned in the text, and Index of First Words or Lines of Hymns. Organists and choir masters may find this a useful bringing together of scattered data, but the general public would find a broader scoped study of hymns more useful.
