By the author of Far From Home, this is the story of a New England boys' prep school and one boy's emotional, and idealistic breakup. Newman has something of Wallace Stegner -- and the book is for that type of market; he's young, tense, terse, and not quite capable of doing a fully rounded book. The story, told by Paul Maine, a senior, is about his roommate, Boss. Boss, disgusted at the sizeable amount of professionalism introduced on the football team, quits, withdraws from the school life, and becomes involved with the new German teacher, a ""queer"". The book closes with the death of Boss -- and the boys' revenge on the German teacher. A smooth, if indecisive, book.
