Another sound nutritional guide for the serious athlete--this rime, from Martina Navratilova's (and other biggies') guru. Haas is a clinical nutritionist who has mastered the appropriate breathy, diet-guide style: ""After years of research and work with some of the world's foremost professional athletes, I am ready to reveal the 'secrets' of the Haas Peak Performance Program to you."" His advice is fine, though: in conjunction with a concerned physician (who can monitor blood tests which will show improved health through lower cholesterol levels, for instance), the serious athlete should rely on a diet high in complex carbohydrates, low in fats and refined foods, and lower in protein than still-common athlete lore would have us believe. Adherents can then realistically look forward to improved cardiovascular health, more energy, and a sense of well-being--which will lead, in turn, to improved performance. After laying out the whys and wherefores of the program, Haas devotes considerable space to recipes and menus (easily prepared, and appealing). Helpful for athletes, including serious amateurs--but, the name aside, no more useful than Bayrd and Quilters' Food for Champions (1982).
