Needless to say, the lady has had her share of admirers--the reasons are all outlined clearly on these pages--and India needs all the friends she can muster. But Mr. Andrews, mixing biography and history, slights both. Nehru's sister, the first woman to represent India at many diplomatic stations, the first to preside over the United Nations: fascinating material. Madame Pandit in Moscow, in New York, in Washington: charming. But Nehru, Gandhi, Bhave, Krishna Menon shared the spotlight with her and Mr. Andrews generally disregards them, thus providing less perspective than he might have.
