Dr. Ames believes that ""He could do better if he would"" should be transposed to ""He would do better if he could."" Based on her last ten years of work at the Gesell Institute, along with some collateral Ford Foundation research, she claims that one out of three children are overplaced; that behavioral not chronological age should be the determinant; that youngsters should not be started too soon rather than held back later, but that it is better to repeat a grade than submit the child to extensive tutoring, etc. The book provides emotional guidelines for the four to eight year old (at six month intervals); goes into developmental placement tests at some length; itemizes what parents should watch or watch out for; closes with some further correctives. With the prevalence of dropouts, of intellectual forcefeeding from space-age or college entrance pressures, this may well be instrumental in helping the average parent find the right school situation for her average (below or above) youngster.
