HOCKEY by Robert Heit

Pub Date: June 6th, 1972
Publisher: Abelard-Schuman

Even if you appreciate all the anecdotes about scrapping players, temperamental referees and riotously loyal fans, the chapter heading which asks ""Is It Also the World's Funniest Game?"" is likely to evoke a flat negative. Heit can't be blamed for telling it like it is, but, after a brief introduction to rules and jargon, the chatty stories about those gutsy old-time greats soon begin to pall and the gentlemanly demeanor of the Bobbies (Hull and Orr) is something of a relief. Even Howard Liss's Goal! Hockey's Stanley Cup Playoffs and Frank Orr's Hockey's Greatest Stars (both 1970) offer a broader perspective on the game; if you own either this new volume will cut no ice.
