THE INDIAN'S SECRET WORLD

These carefully told story-essays describe certain instances of religious life in many of our North American tribes, and they are the result of the author's lifetime study that was Prompted and furthered by warm personal connections with Indians of today. As a young man he was adopted by Chippewas and the experience led to further knowledge of the Sioux, the Ojibwa, Blackfeet, Seneca and Pueblo Indians. Each of the stories here is about a different tribal custom and the reasons for it- for instance, how the Blackfeet paint their tepees and find through their dreams the designs to put on the skins; the meanings of the brave deeds that earn a Cheyenne a bonnet; the operations of the Seneca False Face society, and so on. Written with careful consideration, these should prove informative.
