WHAT IS SIN? WHAT IS VIRTUE?

The preaching minister of the Riverside Church offers here two series of sermons, dealing respectively with the Seven Deadly Sins and the Seven Cardinaal Virtues. Each of the topics is reflected upon in a discursive way, turned about in hand, so to speak, so that its various facets are illuminated. The general mode of discourse is expository and considerable use is made of biblical and literary illustration. The argument proceeds largely at the moral level, and the reader may regret that the deeper insights into the nature of sin and of virtue which are now available from psychological sources are not used to give a more trenchant thrust to the material. The overall impact will be to remind the reader of the seriousness and importance of these characteristics of human behavior, but it is doubtful that he will be driven to feel that the ""sins"" are indeed deadly, or the ""virtues"" cardinal.
