JACK JOHNSON: Heavyweight Champion

This new entry in the redoubtable ""Black Americans of Achievement"" series brings to life one of the most colorful personalities in the history of prizefighting. Johnson, the first black heavyweight world champion, was as famous for his antics in the ring (he once wore pink pajamas) as he was in famous for his high-rolling life-style. Jakoubek provides detailed accounts of Johnson's major bouts and also shows how his open preference for fast cars and white women exacerbated the strong prejudice that greeted him at every turn. His later years are summarized in a page; he's last seen as a raconteur in a Times Square arcade and as a dignified elder statesman of boxing. The b&w photos really capture Johnson's expansive personality, as well as the look of his opponents and his time. Chronology; complete professional record; fine bibliography; index.
