HITE TEACHER IN A BLACK SCHOOL

Mr. Kendall spent two years teaching in a majority Negro school in the Los Angeles area and his report card combines literal experience with his very sincere attempt to help the youngsters who were the products of abominable home environments, if any. Illiteracy was high-- so was ""useing""- and, even worse, the proliferating obscenity. Then there was the unanimous attitude that if you are white, you're an enemy, and this ""Teach"" faced on the first day. But which this book has as high an Incidence of delinquency to record as any, (marijuana; promiscuity; rumbles; an attempt to kill an old crippled woman, etc.), even more disturbing is the official indifference of the Board of Education and in particular that of the principle in this school. Kendall refused not only to observe the fiat of the intentional pass (and was sharply criticized for giving poor grades), but on the other hand tried to work after school with some of his pupils who could be redeemed and to instill some sense of the meaning of education. When Kendall was attacked and injured by one of his boys, principle Towers had only this to say-- ""it doesn't look good if one of us is injured."" None of this looks very ""good"" - but it should as a lesson for the times and a potential corrective
