Wilson's Secretary of State died in 1928, leaving the manuscript unfinished. The original plan included three sections:- Neutrality, War, Peace. The text goes through 1917. In spite of this, it is one of the most absorbing books of the period which has appeared -- the day by day unfolding of the steps which brought America into the war, with his memoranda of discussions with the president and with belligerent powers through their representatives. Documentary material colored by illuminating comments on nations, individuals and events. A fairer and more balanced picture than the best seller, Road to War, probably because there is no element of pamphleteering. Sure to create a vast amount of comment and interesting discussion, and a certain amount of rancor. Should get lead reviews and prove easy selling to mature men and women to whom the days of the war are still vitally interesting.
