THE PLEASURES OF WINE

Introduced by Andre Simon, the dean of wine experts, Robert Balzer displays his own flair for fine wines in an anecdotal approach to the fruit of the vine. His main interest lies with the California products (he lists the twenty-one fine varietal wines of California since 1769) and premier California wineries, and as he makes his manners in Sonoma, San Joaquin, the Napa Valley, we are invited along for the tasting and toasting of top-flight wines. The hosts are in attendance, and the effect is of a combination guided tour and ""at home"" party. There are notes too on the tasting process: how to judge appearance, odor, and flavor.
