Eight stories by the author of Casualty and Find Me In Fire make their appearance from magazines and anthologies, Mademoiselle, The Western Review, Cross Section, Spearhead and Story. The title story is distinctly reminiscent of Burns' The Gallery in its picture of Rome under the occupation, the soldiers and the women caught in the whirlpool of the moment: the others range from a soldier's parting from his wife, a little Mexican girl who falls in love with a passing soldier, a soldier who drinks and beds his way through a leave, never getting home to his parents, a young soldier who would be a poet, to a bitter tale of an Army chiseler who is the cause of Italian vengeance and the death of two of his friends, to a story of a neurotic young woman painter, and a small sketch of a veteran returned to civilian life. Strong brew, whose harsh impact is not for delicate tastes. Warning PLs.
